Allyn Miner

Allyn Miner is a Lecturer in the Department of South Asia Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Her research and publications relate to the history of North Indian music and its literature in Sanskrit, Hindi, and Urdu. Allyn received her B.A. in South Asian studies from the University of Wisconsin. Between 1971 and 1982 she lived and studied in Varanasi, India, first on the Wisconsin Year in India Program and later with the support of Fulbright and Rockefeller grants. She studied sitar performance with Thakur Raj Bhan Singh and musicology with Professor Prem Lata Sharma at Banaras Hindu University. She received a Ph.D. in 1982 from the Department of Musicology, B.H.U., for her dissertation “Sitar and Sarod in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries.”
After returning to the U.S. she began performance training under Ustad Ali Akbar Khan and became his formal disciple in 1990. Allyn began teaching at the University of Pennsylvania in 1988 and received a Ph.D. in Sanskrit in 1994 for her work on the Sanskrit musicological text, Sangītopanişatsāroddhāra. She continues to teach, perform, and pursue research.
